The N/A Trade: What Blank Due Diligence Fields Actually Cost You

MaxMeta โ€ข โ€ข Macro

A risk report landed on my desk last Tuesday. Nine analytical dimensions. Supply structure. Token economics. Team. Governance. Chain position. Regulatory exposure. Liquidity depth. Every single cell said the same thing: N/A โ€” insufficient information.

Two-thirds of my team read that as "no red flags." I read it as the most expensive signal on the page.

Here is the desk rule I've traded by since 2017: blank fields are not neutral. They are priced at zero, which means the moment something fills them, the repricing is violent and one-directional. The market charges you for ignorance. It just never tells you the invoice date.

This is not a story about a broken report. It is a story about how crypto systematically misprices missing information. Nine dimensions, zero data points, and a market that will spend the next month pretending "unknown" means "safe." That gap is the biggest edge left on the table. Let me show you the math.

The framework in question is a nine-dimension diligence model โ€” technical, token economics, market, ecosystem position, regulatory, team and governance, risk, narrative, and supply-chain transmission. Institutional desks run versions of it. When it works, it converts raw information into gradeable risk factors and tells you which exposure to size up and which to cut.

The N/A Trade: What Blank Due Diligence Fields Actually Cost You

When every dimension returns N/A, most people assume the model failed. They are half right. The input pipeline had gone empty โ€” no title, no source, no project name, no timestamp, no information points. Zero data in, all-N/A out. Garbage in, blank out.

But here is what the framework got right, and what almost everyone glosses over: it explicitly flagged that N/A does not mean low risk. It means unknown risk. That one line is worth more than everything else in the document. The report even graded its own information value across four axes โ€” technical, investment, timing, reference โ€” at zero stars each, and listed the minimum data set needed to restart: a title, a source, a named project, an event type, a timestamp. It knew exactly what it did not know. That is, in its own dry way, the most honest document I have read all quarter.

I have spent sixteen years in this market watching people make exactly one mistake in twenty different costumes: treating the absence of evidence as evidence of safety.

In 2017, I shorted overvalued ICO utility tokens while everyone else read whitepapers as guarantees. Those whitepapers were empty of engineering and full of narrative, and the market priced them as if the narrative were the product. I made 40% in three weeks on a $50,000 book running a mainnet-to-DEX arbitrage bot. Not because I was smarter than the crowd. Because I priced the gap between story and code, and the gap paid. That is still the whole game: find the fields everyone marks N/A, and trade them.

Let me be technical, because hand-waving about "unknown risk" is useless without a mechanism.

When a diligence dimension returns no data, what is the market actually doing? It is defaulting to a reference price. And in crypto, the reference price for a token carrying four hundred unverifiable claims is "whatever the last narrative candle closed at." Social sentiment becomes the oracle. That is the flaw.

Concretely: a token with no disclosed supply schedule has an unknown float. An unknown float means you cannot compute dilution. If you cannot compute dilution, you cannot compute fair value. If you cannot compute fair value, you are not investing โ€” you are buying a lottery ticket and calling it research.

I watched that exact failure mode detonate with Terra/Luna in 2022. My team spent two weeks reverse-engineering the algorithmic stablecoin's decay. The data was technically available on-chain, but the critical oracle and bridge-contract parameters were either opaque or simply taken at face value. Everyone treated the missing pieces as neutral. They were not neutral. They were the entire trade. When the bridge oracle got manipulated, the death spiral ran on a curve nobody had priced. I published the decay model on GitHub; three financial outlets cited it. Not because I predicted the collapse โ€” because I marked what was labeled N/A as a live loss vector instead of a rounding error.

Here is how a desk actually prices this. When I cannot value a position, I do not assign it zero โ€” I assign it a distribution. Undisclosed float means the dilution factor could be 5% or 60%; that spread is the position. I size for the worse tail, not the median. If the missing field is an audit, I assume a worst-case exploit of 40% of TVL and price the hedge accordingly. You are always long the tail you refused to model.

Same mechanic, cleaner example: the yield farms of 2020. I ran team capital into SushiSwap and Curve and turned $200,000 into $850,000 in six months. But I scaled back the moment gas started eating the spread. Why? Because the farms broadcast an APR and hid the real number โ€” emissions-funded yield with no organic fee base behind it. Yield is the rent you pay for holding someone else's risk, and in most farms the landlord is the token printer. The reward token bled; the "APR" was a number computed against a ghost asset. Retail saw a big number and marked the risk N/A. I saw an undefined denominator and treated the whole position as impaired.

Run that forward to this cycle. ZK rollup proving costs are absurdly high โ€” unless gas returns to bull-market levels, operators bleed per proof. The funding announcements trumpet "$100M raised." They never mention that the per-transaction cost structure is inverted. That field is N/A in every deck, and it is the only field that matters.

This is also where the AI-agent narrative will burn people. In 2025 I led development of an autonomous trading agent โ€” 10,000 transactions a day, 15% monthly return before we bolted hard risk limits on. Its failure mode was not bad logic. It was that when a data field came back empty, the model imputed a value from sentiment. Missing input became bullish input. We wrote a hard stop: no data means flat, not long. Human sets the parameters; the machine executes. Always.

We don't trade a number we can't reconstruct. That line has saved more capital than any signal I have ever built.

Here is the counter-intuitive part, and it cuts against my own industry.

Everyone assumes the danger of blank diligence is the project โ€” that a sketchy token will rug you. Wrong. The real danger is the reader. A desk that sees N/A and files it under "no red flags" has just taken a full-size position in something it cannot value, and does not know it. That is not a bad project. That is a bad process, and process failures scale.

Smart money doesn't wait for the blank to fill itself. It prices the blank as optionality and sizes down until the field is populated. When I built the 2021 NFT floor-sweep scripts โ€” 15 Bored Apes, 50 Art Blocks pieces, 300% ROI before the crash โ€” the money was not made on the art. It was made by treating illiquid trait data as a microstructure problem and brutally marking the exit-liquidity field, which the culture deliberately left blank. When the liquidity crunch hit, I sold part of the book at a loss. That loss was the tuition for learning that a blank order-book field is the most honest field of all.

The market's incentive is perverse. Marketing teams get paid to fill narrative fields and leave financial ones empty. A governance post full of ambition and empty of delegation data โ€” who the top ten delegates are, how concentrated voting power runs โ€” still gets funded. Delegation makes governance more centralized, because users outsource research to the loudest KOL. That field is always N/A in the deck. Always.

So what do you do with an all-N/A report? You do not delete it. You trade it.

Treat every blank dimension as a live position with undefined downside. If the float is undisclosed, you are short convexity whether you know it or not. If the APR has no fee base, you are long the token printer's goodwill. If the team is anonymous and the audit is "pending," you are holding a lottery ticket with a stop-loss that does not exist.

Concrete levels, the way I would actually run the book: any project where supply schedule, unlock cliff, and top-ten concentration are all undisclosed gets zero allocation โ€” not small, zero. Any yield where organic fees are under half the advertised APR gets scaled to quarter size until two consecutive weeks of fee data confirm it. Any L2 whose per-proof economics only pencil at last cycle's gas gets treated as insolvent on a 90-day forward view.

The next hundred days will decide who ever learned this. Millions will chase the same narratives with the same blank fields, and when those fields finally populate โ€” an unlock, an audit, a fee report โ€” the repricing will be instant and unforgiving.

The trade is not the token. The trade is the gap between what is known and what is priced.

You already have the report. The question is whether you will read the N/A out loud.
