The onchain integration was transparent. That's what makes this failure worse. They checked all the boxes: quality, execution, blockchain integration. They did everything right. And it still wasn't enough. The team said they couldn't find a way to achieve commercial success and growth, and that's the only path to continue funding the studio. They needed all the revenue streams to cover the cost of development. They needed the token to appreciate. They needed the user base to grow organically. They needed the onchain economy to generate sustainable fees. And the market just didn't respond the way it had to. But let me look at the numbers a bit more carefully. Because I see a pattern I've observed in many crypto projects that haven't yet failed. There is a threshold of users required to make an onchain game pay for itself. Below that threshold, the network effects never kick in. The liquidity providers have no reason to stay. The players have no one to trade with. The economy dries up. ONCHAIN GAMES NEED A CRITICAL MASS OF LIQUIDITY Not just any liquidity. It needs to be liquidity that is willing to price in the risk of unproven game assets. The technology finally caught up with the vision. But the user base isn't crossing over. The economics of the market have changed. The decentralized game economy is not attractive to traditional players who could just play World of Warcraft. The tension is between accessibility and decentralization. The more you decentralize, the more you have to expose the user to the underlying blockchain. But you can't have a huge mainstream audience if you require them to manage their own custody and private keys. BEHIND THE SCENES: A DECENTRALIZED GAME STUDIO DOESN'T MAKE SENSE There is also a second angle to the failure that I want to explore: the costs of running a game studio that is trying to be decentralized. I've seen the impact of this from a technical perspective. A typical game only sends a small amount of state data to the server. But when you run a game onchain, the server cost is replaced by something else: the cost of the chain. The chain is the server. And you have to pay for the resources. The developer has to maintain the full Node. If the protocol is built on another chain, you have to handle the cost of gas for the users. There is a fundamental mismatch between web2 cost structures and web3 transparency. The transparency that crypto promises is expensive because of the nature of the blockchain trilemma. So you're paying higher infrastructure costs while the user acquisition costs are also higher. And when the market is weak, the revenue cycle has nothing to feed off of. A TOKEN WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ENOUGH The real flaw in the Proof of Play thesis was the belief that the novelty of the tech would be a strong enough pulling factor. It was not. They can speculate. Speculation is a good thing if the underlying demand for the asset is growing. But if the game doesn't grow, the asset value goes to zero. The players who are in the game for the ownership are the ones who leave first. The ones who are in it for the game don't care about the ownership. They will still be there after the token value collapses. MY TAKE: PLAY-TO-EARN WAS A CULTURAL, NOT TECHNICAL, DEAD END And that's why the industry is going to go through a period of tough love. I said this about Terra in 2022. The "Won't these smart contracts fail" conversation is a distraction. The truthful conversation is about the model. The "house of cards built on hope" is not the code; it's the business model. The code does what the code is designed to do. It cannot protect you from the economic reality. Or you build a game that is truly transparent. But you can't build a game that's only a platform for speculation and expect it to last. The history of the space is written in the failures. And the writing is on the wall. Onchain gaming is transitioning from an era of irrational exuberance to one of rational application. The question now is who will survive the transition. We've seen the market crash. We've seen the business models fail. Now, we're going to see what's left when the floodwaters recede. No new pirate nation will sail forth until the economics are fixed. Or maybe they will. Maybe the next cycle will bring in the real users, the ones who just want a good time. The tech is ready. The code is waiting. But the incentives need to be aligned, and the risk must be priced in. Otherwise, we're just building the next house of cards.
