It could also remove the feedback loops that made its trading engine adaptive.

A possible sale would therefore be more than a portfolio adjustment. It could represent a change in the company’s identity. Virtu would move toward a narrower model in which the primary customer is effectively the market itself, while former brokerage clients become counterparties whose orders the firm seeks to price and internalize or route efficiently.

The less obvious risk is strategic information loss. If institutional clients move to a buyer that also serves competing market participants, they may become more cautious about sharing workflow data, execution requirements, or product feedback. There is another blind spot. A sale designed to reduce regulatory exposure does not eliminate regulation.
